A Bit about Ilford, Essex. The Town of Ilford is based in the London Borough of Redbridge in Essex. It currently has around 41,300 inhabitants (May 2001) and has been sited on the banks of the River Roding (prev. River Hile) since Saxon times when it was known as Hile-ford or Ilefort. The first Mayor of Ilford was Peter Griggs and he presented a Clock Tower to the town in 1901. It was in 1965 when Ilford was incorporated into the London Borough of Redbridge.
